So, is it time to sing yet?

Greegtings all,

Last one, last one. The ol'Flippers are about to fall off but this little Fishmouse isn't giving up any time soon. Speaking of which, I present (and promise not to post about on my own sites) ...

Running the wheel - social networking
Ah, a topic I know allready - the social network, even if i'm old school and prefer Livejournal over Myspace and Facebook. I do have a Myspace and will proberbly get a Facebook one day. The world usage map was interesting, not suprising but I wonder if it's still true?

Swimming around - social networking in the library
Interesting concept. I can see potential for use with teenagers. I'd proberbly want to go through myspace as I am familiar with it and know that they use it. It can be used to showcase what's new, events and hopefully create dialogue. The biggest downside - it would need to be monitered often. I suppose that would be the draw back with using any of the social networking sites in any library area - having the staff available to constantly moniter and update the site.
In my workplace I unfortunatly don't personally have the time and are unsure if I would be allowed to anyway :( Would be nice to implement, even if its Facebook to access the large numbers of young parents we have currently comming through the doors, assuming they are Facebook users. It would also be hard to guage what site (or sites) to go with, depending on your area, patron age and preferneces in this are.
For youth, reading groups, and parents/children groups it could be a very usefull tool. It would be very easy just to put up a new post for marketting of a new event or program. Regular programs and events could have perment banners or messages posted on site.
Second life - Libraries! I've never dipped my toes into that particular pond but must admit that I am thoroughly intrigued.

This is the last time you'll be seeing me post for the 2.0 course . I'ts been lots of fun and hopefully for my audience, you've enjoyed yourself also. Thankyou to everyone who's comented and keep learning and having fun while doing so.

It's like Kindergarten share time all over again...

Greetings all,

Ah, it's a lovely looking day outside and this Fishmouse, is as always, locked in her tank. Where has the time gone? 1 day before the deadline and I've 2 more posts to go - better get cracking. PS - go blues!

Running the wheel - Slideshare
Will not load - argh! Shall try again later. I do like the document converter - i'll never have to change and re-save again! Well, I may, but document converters hopefully should make life a lot easier.

Swimming around - Google Docs
I can see one problem with this - most computers (well, my work PC at least) come with programs that can do this. With an older machine sans word processing programs this could be handy. For collaboration projects, say between two youth librarians, BAM! this is fantastic. So I threw together a small, simple little presntation. It's short and crappy as i'm feeling a little strapped for time. I'm hoping that this kind of program will be usefull for future events. Off it's sent, done and done.

No time to stop - on to the next,

It's a Monster Mash...

Greetings all,

Second week of the school holidays and things have quieted down - fractionally. The sky's have been gray and I've had a visit from my Parents and youngest sister, who I am delightfully educating by taking her to comic book and record stores. An interesting weekend for in the rain at any rate. Currently listening to funk (my genre work choice for the past week at any rate) while wanting to get my teeth into the Misfits cover of Monster Mash. Seems appropriate.

Running the wheel - Mashups
Ohh - the starry sky. Excellent example, it's a shame i'm not an astronomy geek. Took a long time to load on my browser and then didn't want to move the night sky at all - oh well. I am allready a fan of Google maps. I've found them very usefull in the past for finding places and are always amused by the zoom function.
Swimming around - bighugelabs
Oh goody - what fun. http://bighugelabs.com/flickr/ is easy to navigate, use and has potential.Unfortunately, I can't see many applications which will be used besides as a local history tool but I'm more than willing to try to adapt my mind for Children's and Young Adult programs. The mash up in the top right hand corner is not only one of my favourite YouTube clips but also my new desktop. I present, The Breakfast Monkey in the style of Warhol. I've made a second picture which is Super Grover : the puzzle. It's a shame that I didn't know about this program then because this would have been a great promotional poster.
Well, I'm off to find another mash up - shall be back to tell you about it. After a mug of hot chocolate that is.
Enjoy your day,
~ mishka

From the screen to your earphones - not another New Found Glory

Greetings all,

Another day, another chapter of this done! Busy, cold and rainy. You'd think a Fishmouse would be ok with the wet but this one has become accoustemed to the warmer days we've been having. Oh well.

Running the wheel - Podcasts
I went to the BBC and listened to Neil Gaiman talks about the Ramayana (MP3, 45min, 18.3MB) Listen now. What do you know, it worked! It's always interesting listening to a favourite author talk and I wasn't dissapointed. On the ABC, I listened to an early JJJ Unearthed podcast, taking care to pick one with bands I hadn't heard of.
I can see potential, especially if your library has a well established and used website. You could have podcasts for featured books, book clubs, children and youth programs and local community events just to name a few. It would depend on how much room you have with your server and IT restrictions but yeah, this is a concept wich sprinkled lightly could indeed spice up an otherwise average library site. As a tool for education and training... once again, could be very useful so long as it's used right.

Swimming around - Online Education Database
I'm off to have a bit of a nose around and listen to something interesting - I'll keep you posted as to what later. Besides that, I'm looking forward to getting home and curling up and finishing the scarf that I'm knitting.

See you all soon,

~mishka

Q & A for the book set

Greetings all,

Long time no see. It's been terribly busy here, what with preperations for Youth Week and the school holidays. With any luck, It will get quiet in a few weeks. Untill then, I'll keep grabbing snatches of music while I work.

Running the wheel - Answer boards
I had a bit of a look around http://answerboards.wetpaint.com/. Interesting, the answers which are highly rated by the community. However, I do not see a lot of use in 'Slamming' in my current position of Children and Young Adult technician as this seems to be a reference tool and that's an area I rarely dip my toes into.

Swimming around - Yahoo Answers
Have posted an answerto Yahoo!7 Answers. Was stupidly easy, but I like the world operating that way.

I'll keep it short and sweet - the ABC has been Rickrolling me and I find that both amusing and midly disturbing but leave you with this... http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=TqnQrdfhicg. I remember enjoying this film.

Untill next time,

Bag, tag and release...

Greetings all,

I come to you with a fresh coat of pink on my scales and a new addition of purple fringe scales. Have had a lovely time recently, except for the work internet being down for three days *grrr*. It made me realise how much I've come rely on it. So, after a brief delay, I give you...

Running the wheel, first session - del.icio.us
I hadn't come across Del.icio.us before today. As requested, http://del.icio.us/fishmouse is my official account. As it's said in Spiderman, 'with great power comes great responsibility,' and this piece of software may be responsible for me finally considating the combined efforts of many sessions tooling around on the interwebs. Instead of web-swinging my way through an urban jungle of bookmarks and favourites I can tag them for speedy browsing.

As a research tool this has great power to, once the offical hunt it over, quickly allow you to not only see what you've allready saved but quickly see what their about and go to them. I see great potential for Information and research queries, Community Information, Local History Information, Author information. From what I've seen of Sutherland Shire Libraries tag cloud and Cleveland Public Library’s tags they've thought along similar lines. For me, time and patience will be large factors in the quality of my tagging. I might have to give it a trial run the next time I prepare for a Story time.

Running the wheel, second session - Technorati

Hmmm... interesting. Technorati - another site I was unaware of. Seems like there is more out there than I knew about, which is brilliant. I love learning new things, and all this will come in handy once I finally get a functioning laptop for the home fishbowl. I can't rely on the work fishtank forever. Searched for 'Bookmobile'. Options to choose from: posts, blogs, photos and videos. The general search brought up all kinds of choices from reviews, interviews, festivals and some pretty colourfull Bookmobile vehicles.

The advanced search let me get very specific about the bookmobile I was interested in, as expected. I can see this being handy if you have a bit of spare time up your sleeve and are looking for a topic specific blog in particular but as with all databases, you have to be carefull with your search terms. NSWPLN2008 search results - a great big fat nothing. I'll let you know if I get anything later.

Swimming around - LibraryThing
Oh, a booklovers site created by booklovers allowing one to create a personal catalogue of their favourites. http://www.librarything.com/catalog/fishmouse is where you'll find my collection. I do like the look of this site and if I ever find the time, shall take the time to build up a colelction of books and reviews. I like that I can also see ratings and reviews and know they aren't linked with any publishing house or bookseller pushing for a sale. Honesty. Refreshing. Now to be find a site allowing me to read them online and I'd be in heaven. Can't see it happening anytime soon, mores the pity.

Well, this little worker bee had better get back to collecting honey, a difficult task underwater at the best of times. For those curious folk out there to shy to ask, the answer to last times question is 'Rickrolling'. A social networking phenonom where you post or email Rick Astleys 'Never gonna give you up' under a heading along the lines of some celebrity scandal or other interesing tidbit. (clue: highlight the blank space to see the answer) To those who knew and didn't say anything - shame. I'll have to drink the coffee for you. To everyone else, I will see you later.
Enjoy the week,

~mishka

I'm ready for my close up...

Greetings all,

It may be the end of the week, but you have a happy Fishmouse here. Why? Well, lets take a look at lesson 6.

Running the wheel - Online Video
All the clips you can eat! Took a look in Youtube and wow, the sheer variety of essential things to see, hear and waste my time with is staggering. YouTube is easy to search and is very user friendly. saw me look at Lego Indiana Jones and the stop motion Lego Millennium Falcon. Liverpool Plains bought up Plain White T's, it is a pity that I am sick of Hey there Delilah, especially after seeing them at Soundwave. Google video I'm less familiar with but from inspection of Lego, seems to work in the same way as Youtube but is takes a little longer to upload. I do like the way they have categories to choose from for easy selection. Oh, in amusing news, Google video is linking me directly to YouTube to watch videos.
I'm yet to discover which one has a large library and whether they host more of a certain type of film but I digress. For work this could be very useful & interesting only if properly controlled.

Swimming around
Well, I've been waiting for this. It may be a week early, but anyone familiar with any social networks should be familiar with this. I apologise in advance for those who recognise what I've done. So, without further ado, I introduce to you:

(really, I should have a little hyperlink called something like "Hot Library Action" but I am too lazy to make it work at the moment. )

Tune in next time for an explanation,

~ mishka

p.s. - if you know what I've done, I'll owe you a coffee. First response only!

Who'd like to eat the wiki fruit?

Greetings all,

Ah, Friday. The end of another week. Just in time too because the water in this tank needs a change - it's fading the ends of my scales. Either that or it was the stress involved with starting new programs. Either way, resembling a Tequila Sunrise does not bode well for one who lives in an aquatic environment.

Running the wheel - Wiki

As a little fish in the ocean, I've come across Wikipedia in my time and have found it very useful for some quick background information and the occasional bibliography. Today I took a little dip into Wookieepedia and boy, I am not a big enough Star Wars fanatic to get enough out of this site. That said, it is fascinating look at how with the right 'experts', specialisation in Wiki's can be extremely successful. Book Lovers Wiki was interesting - reader book reviews. Immediate application could be use in with the catalogue or for book review groups. A wiki might also work with a local history collection. Montana History Wiki is a good example of that.

Now to find out if I can apply a Wiki to my job. I am unsure as of yet, but shall keep you posted if anything brilliant comes to mind.

Swimming around
PB Wiki appears to be a very user friendly Wiki site. More information when I actually receive the invite key ... *growls like a grizzly*

:Edit: Monday 10th. Have recieved the invite key and have had a go at modifying the existing Children's services page on the PB Wiki. Scarily easy. Juist click edit then the page is yours! Muaahh! I was tempted to wipe the slate clean but decided just to make a small addition.

In the tradition of Bad Pun Friday, I've included one in the title of today's entry. Bonus points for picking it up and suppressing a cringe.

Enjoy your afternoons,

~ mishka

Feed me, Seymour!

Greetings all,

It's Monday morning and I'm back in the Salt Mines. A pity since my feet seem to ache and I've the week to go, but we all know who's fault that is. While I'm ducking my head in shame and dreaming of foot massages I'll let you scroll down through my latest 2.0 learning adventure.

Running the wheel - RSS
Today's task involved discovering about RSS and newsreaders, previously unused by myself who instead was relying on updating my LJ friendlists for post updates. RSS feeds are far easier to use and monitor. Google blog search was incredibly useful for keyword searching for existing RSS feeds and blogs of interest. My newly minted Bloglines account has a lovely list displaying all my subscriptions, allowing me to click and view at my own, or rostered, leisure.

Swimming around
The hardest part, as always, lies in choosing what subscriptions wisely. In a clear display of age, I quickly hooked myself up to ABC News : Just In, Alternative Teen Services, Dinosaur Comics, Mugglenet, Neil Gaimen's journal and the Powerhouse Museum photo of the day site. It's only a start, but I've tried to cover a range of personal and professional interests. Unfortunately, using the Google blog search for an all round music/gig review site has proven disappointing so far. Perhaps I am being too fussy.

I don't need to use my crystal ball to see the potential this handy little device has for my job. With a RSS feed I can have pertinent youth and children's information pulled straight to my eager and waiting eyes and disseminating fingers. I can then utilise the information to manage the collection and plan topical programs. Further thinking, the work website could even have RSS feeds linked directly to it, for example, book reviews. This ability to link relevant material is essential for any information providers, including little Fishmice like myself. Now I'll have to journey off and investigate the existing blogs of my fellow compatriots.

I'd better be getting back to work before I hear the whip cracking. My reccomended for the day:http://www.qwantz.com/ Dinosaur Comics.

Enjoy!

There's room in this bowl for two (or more)

Greetings my fellow adventurers!

Well, it has been a busy week, on both a professional and personal level and swimming around in lovely pictures is a fantastic way to wrap up the week.. right before a busy weekend. If you've noticed something different, you're right! I've decided to split the obvious sections up and evolve this blog a little.

Running the Wheel
Creative Commons = Very interesting reading. Expansion of resonable, felxible copyright makeing more creative content availablefor sharing but not commercial use is exactly the kind of thing I stand for. Yes, I allready use the photo etiuqette but it's always nice to know you are doing things correctly.

Flicker: 1 lousy photo of my place of employment... which wasn't even right! *Grinds teeth* I did however enjoy flittnig around the site hunting on my own. The tags made it very easy for me to navigate my way aorund the site and I'm looking forward to exploring the group function.

Swimming around
In light of this, and the upcomming event tomorrow night, I thought it might be appropriate to post this little picture. Why I chose this picture? Rainbow Glitter! Two things I like and feel are appropriate because tomorrow is Mardi Gras. Thankyou to ::sämyii:: on flicker for the fabulous shot.
Blooger photo upload tool is very clear and easy to work with. I had no problems posting this photo.
Enjoy the weekend and feel free to comment,

A little bit of Fry and 2.0...

Greetings one and all,

This may seem a little backwards, but since this very blog is a product of week two, I really should introduce you to, even briefly, week one.

Web 2.0... The machine is Us/ing us ~ fascinating little video illustration communications evolution and the online information revolution.

Life long learning ~ Hear, hear! Oh yes, my pretties, learning never ends. I still believe 71/2 Should have been 'have fun!' but the list is true enough.

Stephen Fry discuss 2.0 ~ Who doesn't love this man. Tagged 'National Treasure', Mr Fry calmly grabs you by the hand for a short stroll through the 2.0 park, not only stopping to explain exactly what it is but also opening discussion of the future of traditional media as we know it.

The emphasis of the weeks tasks was to keep your mind open, be flexible and above all, have FUN!

That's the kind of thing I can get right into, this fun business. One that note, I'll set my own adventure task for the weekend. I demand that everyone reading this go out and do something fun, even if it's only for a few minutes.

First go on the brand new wheel...

Greetings all.

Well, this does feel weird. Official blogging, not just concert reviews, talking about the pretty in its many shapes and forms, the occasional whinge... but no, this is Blogging with a purpose. Not personal, but Business with a great big capital 'B'. Awkwardness aside, lets get the official business out of the way, at least temporally.

* What do you hope to learn from the program?
Two things. Firstly, any of the finer, minute points that I may have missed in my self-taught blogging adventures. This particular site is all new and shiny. Secondly, how I can utilise a blog for a library setting successfully.

* What do you think about Lifelong Learning?
It's underrated. Learning never really does end, especially outside the education system.

* What other blogs have you discovered? What do you like about them?
Personally, I can't stand myspace, but have one for the the possibility of free gigs and movie previews. I do like the fact that I can hunt down all kinds of information and people at any time and can tailor my blog for my own personal taste and quirks. All the blogs i've discovered aren't really applicable for a library environment.

* Can you see a use for blogs inside the Library? How about blogging for a client audience?
Yes, yes, vindictive (oh my brain, why?! You don't even like Operator Please.) I believe it can be done, it all depends on the audience and getting thier imput.

As a treat for all of you who made it through this far, I've decided to add a little Youtube link. I may have to do this for each post. This one is a little reminder before we depart on our grand adventures. Thanks to Dr Sparkles for mentioning it.

Enjoy!
